Phonic Alien Adventure

The aim of the game is to choose the correct missing phoneme to complete the word and help the aliens learn more about planet Earth. The game has 5 levels that gradually increase in difficulty with longer words and more missing phonemes.

  This app has been created in line with the DfEs Letters and Sounds programme and the words featured have been taken from the high frequency word lists in phases 2-6. However, it can be used in conjunction with any synthetic phonics programme and would be useful to anyone learning how to read.

  You can download it for free from the App Store;
- iPad version
- iPhone version
-       Level 1 focusses on CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) and asks the player to identify the initial sound of each word (i.e. the first letter). This is a key aspect of Phase 1 of the Letters and Sounds programme and will help children to become familiar with how different letters sound. For example:

Cat = …at
Pig = …ig
Mug = …ug

-       Level 2 and 3 focus on words that contain the phonemes introduced in phase 2 and 3 of the Letters and Sounds programme. These words all contain 3 or 4 phonemes and the player will be asked to find one of these. For example:
Goat = G…t
Queen = …een
Rock = Ro…

-       Level 4 and 5 focuses on the phonemes introduced in phase 5 and also re-caps the phonemes from phase 3, as phase 4 does not introduce any new sets. These words contain either 4 or 5 phonemes and the player is asked to find two of these. For example:

Shampoo = Shamp…
Feather = F…ther
Crayon = Cr…on

What exactly are phonics?
  Phonics are a way of teaching people how to read by breaking up words into their sounds, or ‘phonemes’. There are 44 phonemes in the English language and all words can be broken up into these sounds. For example:

  The word cat can be broken up into 3 phonemes - C a t

The word boat can also be broken up into 3 phonemes – B oa t

  For further information on phonics please refer to the Letters and Sounds booklet, which is a publication released by the Department of Education as a guide to the teaching of phonics in the UK.

  How do I install the Phonic Alien Adventure app?
  You can download the free version of Phonic Alien Adventure from the Apple iTunes store. This app is currently only available for iPhone and iPad users, but we hope to make it accessible on other platforms in the future.

  How do I install the other levels?
  Level 1 of Phonic Invasion is available for free, after that you can purchase the other 4 levels for a single in-app purchase. You can do this by pressing the ‘upgrade’ button on the menu screen or by tapping one of the other levels.

  You will have to go through a ‘parental gate’ to verify that you are an adult before logging in with your itunes account.

  How can I prevent my children from making in-app purchases without permission?
  Apple devices have parental control restrictions that can prevent in-app purchases, to activate these go to settings à general à restrictions à in-app purchases.

  I have accidentally deleted the app, do I have to purchase it again?
  You Apple account will remember all the apps that you have purchased, so simply download Phonic Alien Invasion again on the app store. To reinstall your previously purchased in-app purchase just press the ‘restore’ button on the game’s info page.
